By: Ji young &Linda

Summary

As Jem, Dill and Scout sit at the top of the balcony which is originally a place where the Native Americans sit they watch the trial unfold. Mr.Tate is questioned and he believes that on November 21'st Mr.Ewell came up to him and told him that his daughter, Mayella had gotten raped by "some nigger". When Mr.Tate arrived he saw Mr.Ewells daughter. Mr.Tate mentioms "found her lying on the floor in the middle of the front room... She was pretty well beat up...I asked her who hurt her and she said it was Tom Robinson." (167)
Atticus soons finds out that no doctor had examined Mayella but the bruises were on the right side of her face.

Mr.Ewell is the called up and he explains the story in his own words. He describes how he was walking from the woods "with a load o'kindlin' " when he arrives at the fence of his house he hears the screams of his daughter mayella. When he runs towards his house he peers threw the window and sees Mr.Tom Robbinson raping Mayella. When Mr.Ewell enters the house, Mr.Robbinson retreats, Mr.Ewell was to distracted to run after Mr.Robbinson, not knowing waht to do Mr.Ewell seeks Mr.Tate for help.

It was Atticus's turn and he asks Mr.Ewell to write. Mr.Ewell obeys and everyone realises that Mr.Ewell is left handed. If Mayella was punched on the right side of her face then it was most likely that the person punched her with their left hand.
